Cop-hitting driver still at large

HELPLESS: Khalid staring into emptiness from his bed at home
Driver who hit cop a year ago yet to be apprehended

KUALA LUMPUR: It has been more than a year after a police officer became victim of a hit-and-run driver. The culprit responsible for rendering corporal Khalid Che Rus bed-ridden, has yet to be apprehended.

Attached to the Ampang Jaya police headquarters, Khalid, 48, was knocked-down by a car near Jalan Enggang 1, Jalan Datuk Keramat while riding home after completing his duties at 3am on April 29, last year.

The driver sped away from the scene, leaving an injured Khalid lying on the road. He only received help an hour later from a passerby.

The corporal lay in a coma and had to be warded at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for six months before finally being brought home last September.

The father-of-three has since remained largely unresponsive, paralysed and bed ridden and started moving only three weeks ago, said Khalid's wife Satona Pin Yin, 44.

"We can't tell to what extent he remembers us or even if he remembers us at all. If he could talk, then maybe we could ask him."

Things have been difficult for the family since Khalid's accident as Satona is unemployed and is forced to nurse her husband all day while the couple's three sons - aged 20, 19 and 16 respectively - are schooling.

However, Satona said welfare aid helped alleviate her burden somewhat. The family spends at least RM2,000 a month on adult diapers and milk for her husband.

On the accident, Satona said there has been no progress. No one has been apprehended and neither has the driver come forward voluntarily.

On how her children were coping with the situation, Satona said the boys had no choice but to go through the ordeal. They take turns to help her care for their father, who has to be fed through a straw.

Ampang Jaya district police chief ACP Abdul Jalil Hassan confirmed there were no new leads in Khalid's case.

The Malay Mail first highlighted Khalid's plight last March 29, when Abdul Jalil described Khalid as a dedicated and sincere officer.

He urged the public to come forward with information on the case.
