Worker falls 70ft to his death while clearing trees

FREAK: The accident site where the contractor died this morning

KUALA LUMPUR: A freak accident along the Cheras-Seremban highway saw an Indonesian man plunge to his death while he was cutting some branches about 1am today.

The contract worker was elevated by a crane 70 feet up into the air to chop off dead branches of the trees along the highway when a Mitsubishi Pajero rammed into the crane at full speed.

The force of the impact caused the worker to lose his balance before falling to the ground. A fellow co-worker, who was handling the traffic below, said the man was alive for a few minutes before succumbing to his injuries.

"It was horrible. I myself didn't instantly realise that he had fallen down until I heard some faint cries seconds later. He was breathing but couldn't move. We were hoping that it was all going to be okay, but moments later, he was dead."

A police source said there were no traces of tyre marks on the road, which means he didn't jam his brakes despite knocking and dragging along several cones before ramming into the crane.

"And based on the accounts of witnesses, the driver seemed in a daze and could hardly speak or even dial a number to call for help."
