MALACCA: A 66-year-old woman died of shock after receiving a hoax telephone call demanding RM50,000 ransom to free her “abducted granddaughter”.
The victim, a heart patient, collapsed and died at her home in Bukit Beruang upon hearing the news at about 11am yesterday.
Bukit Katil MCA chairman Datuk Koh Nai Kwong, who revealed this, said the victim had called out for her 30-year-old daughter to talk with the abductors.
She then collapsed while still holding onto the telephone receiver. The victim’s daughter later discovered it was a scam when she called the school.
She was told that her 11-year-old daughter was fine and still in her classroom.
Koh said the syndicate, believed to be led by Chinese nationals, had been making such calls to homes here for the past few months.
“They will feign the cries of young children when making calls to victims and demand for ransom money to be placed in secluded places,” he said.
“This is not something new. We have dealt with such scams. They have been scaring people.
“We are perplexed as to how they obtained the telephone numbers. From their accent, we clearly know they are foreigners,” he said.
