Murid maut kerana botol air

Let police handle the matter, says Mohd Arif's father

SERDANG: Siti Nor Hidayah (pic), would never forget that her best friend, Mohd Arif Amirullah, 11, was killed when he was run over by a school van last Thursday.

"This is where it took place," said the 11-year-old as she pointed to a spot at the entrance to the Cempaka block of the Desaminium Flora Apartments in Seri Kembangan here.

Describing Mohd Arif as a cheerful and helpful boy whom she first met in Standard One, Siti Nor (left) said: "Although we were not in the same class, he became my best friend as we stayed at the same apartment block."

She said she would meet him almost everyday at school and at the apartment.

When The Malay Mail visited Mohd Arif's home yesterday afternoon, his father, Dedy Jafiris, 35, was reluctant to speak and requested that no pictures of him or his family to be taken.

"My wife has been traumatised. She was very close to Arif, our eldest child, and was waiting for him to return and had prepared a meal for him."

It is learnt that the couple also have a seven-year-old daughter.

"We don't want to blame anyone and will let the police handle the case. We are still devastated over the incident and I have yet to lodge a police report as we were busy with our son's burial ceremony," said Dedy.

Serdang police chief Supt Abd Razak Elias said police had taken a statement from the 37-year-old van driver.

"According to the driver, he saw Arif walking towards the lift lobby, and when he drove away a few minutes later, he realised that his front tyre had run over something," said Abd Razak.

It is learnt that Mohd Arif was trying to retrieve a water bottle from under the school van.

"The driver immediately got down to inspect and that's when he found Arif lying motionless."

Apartment security guard Rohazman Mohd Disa (pic), 26, said the injured Mohd Arif was first taken by residents to his apartment on the fourth floor.

"Although one of the residents contacted the ambulance, another resident offered to drive Arif to the hospital, and that's when I carried him and sat inside the car while another of our maintenance staff drove to Serdang Hospital."

On the way there, they spotted the ambulance and managed to stop it. Mohd Arif was then rushed by the ambulance to the hospital.

"When I held Arif in my arms, he was shivering and I was praying he will make it," said Rohazman.

The case is being investigated for reckless driving.
